It really bothers me. Like, someone will use perfect grammar and punctuation yet they spell the word "straight" with the number eight.

Am I missing something?

I think these days people are getting very use to texting on their phones. Everything in a text in abbreviated. lets take the word "straight" for an example: Typing out the entire word STRAIGHT is eight (8) letters long. By abbreviating it: Str8 it takes half the time so you actually spare about 2.8888 seconds of your life. Taking that into consideration and multiplying it by how many words can actually be abbreviated, You actually save about 3 hours of your life that you would have wasted typing...... Its not so much a mind game is it is a time saver..... or are people just getting lazy these days?

Some people have trouble with word endings like "aight." Some people think it's cute. And then some people text-message too much!

"Perfect grammar and punctuation"? Surely you don't mean here! :-)

It's all part of the Internet shorthand. It's worse on cell phone texting. And some use it to show how Internet cool they are. I'm often disappointed in the lack of written word skills on the Internet. Chat rooms, forums, and YA is the worst.

Str8 refer to someone's orientation. Straight refers to the crookedness, or lack thereof, of a line.

Quite simple really.

It bothers me when people say "Like" when it's not needed. You could have said " for example"

So what!! It's a short abbreviation, as simple as that. In the texting and instant messaging world that we live in almost everything is shortened when it can be.

Bugs me too.
I use things like that in txt messages when you have limited characters to get your message across but people who do it on the internet annoy me.
Basically its just lazy.

It's an abbreviation with no significance other than that. But it apparently annoys you as much as I get annoyed when a 30 yo man refers to himself as a "boi."
