"it means 2 minus 4. the brackets tell you to simplify inside them before you combine the answer with anything else"
That's a stupid system, why not just use paranthesis?
I'd say go with Geeks answer, since you use bars (" |2-4| ") for absolute values, not brackets. That is, treat it as a range and answer for all possible values of it. If it's easier to understand, look at it this way:
2x + y + 3(-4 + 5x)
Where y is anything between 2 and 4

It looks like a range of values. Like 2-->4
2x + [2-4] + 3(-4+5x)
2x + [2-4] -12 +15x
17x + [8-10]

this is the siric like
......,-3 ,-2 ,-1, 0 ,1 ,2 ,3......
so we can do this type of substrection
if we do 4-2 then its answer is 2
same way we substrect 2-4 we get -2
2x+[2-4]+3(-4+5x)
=2x-2-12+15x
=2x-14+15x
=17x-14
youe answer is 17x-14
if you can not understand then see the anothar exampal,
6-3=you know it is 3
this type 3-6= -3
it must be -
remember this whole life

=[2-4]
=[-2]
=[2]
therefore, [ ] means absolute, so the value in the bracket must be a positive value
=2x+[2]-12+15x
=2x+15x+2-12
=17x-10

not sure.., but seems that [2-4] means 2 TO 4 and since it is ni brackets that means 2 & 4 also included,,SO [2-4] =2,..(all numbers between)..,4.
I think this is a Limits equation,, you need to solve this [2-4] first then you can solve the full equation,,

2x + (2 - 4) + 3(- 4 + 5x) = 0
2x + (2 - 4) - 12 + 15x = 0
(2 - 4) = -12 - 2x - 15x
(2 - 4) = -12 - 17x
