i read online and watched a tv show on history about 2012....scientists said that there was going to be a exact alignment with all the planets in our solar system....and they dont know waht will happen w/ gravity. Some people say there will be a lot of eathquakes, floods, volcanic explosions, and chaos that will lead up to the end of the world...... im getting sorta freaked out...and thats all i can think about! ahhh can some1 tell me the FACTS and waht SCIENTISTS said is GOING TO FOR SURE (MOST LIKELY) HAPPEN. No, not at all. First of all, no such alignment is occuring. Second of all, no such alignment is possible. Third, such an alignment would have no such effects.

The planets can never fall into "exact alignment," because they all orbit in different planes. No more than two planets can ever line up with the Sun at once. And none of the planets can ever have a gravitational pull on Earth that even approaches the gravitational pul lthe Sun already exerts on the planet, not matter how many of them lined up with us.

People seem to focus on 2012 as the date of a possible apocalypse because the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, which doesn't even mean that the Mayans thought the world would end at that point. It's just a quirk, like 20th century computers not being programmed to recognize dates after 1999.

It is sad how more and more North Americans are falling for hoaxes these days. As one said, this is been explained thousands of times.

On December 21 2012, we will come to the last day of the present "Long Count" in the Mayan calendar. On the next day, it will be the first day of the next Long Count.

Happy New Long Count! I expect a gift.

This is (in the Mayan calendar) the same as December 31, 1999 in our calendar.

Remember Y2k? That is the day that our computers blew up and we all died.

Some remember how many people (including many North Americans) ran around scared and panicky, willing to give money to anyone promising them that they would survive.

No doubt many people want to get that excitement going again.

There will be some kind of alignment that day: that is the day on which the winter solstice will appear closest to (but not in line with) the Galactic centre. No deadly rays will be focused. No black hole will jump out and bite us.

This occurs every 25,800 years (give or take a few), a lot less often than the various computer scares.

And yes, some people will allow to have themselves convinced that they should freak out.

It all has absolutely nothing to do with the alignment of the planets..! On the winter solstice our sun will be aligned with the center of our galaxy (..the Milky Way..). Several greedy writers have latched onto this and the calendar used by the ancient Mayans to forecast the end of the world. What they don't tell you in any of their books is that there can't possibly be any effect from such an alignment, nor do they tell you that the last time such an alignment happened was only 26,000 years ago and nothing happened then either..!

Relax and chill out...you're more likely to get zapped by a bolt of lightning than to die from the alignment in 2012.

I am not sure how that would effect gravity, but I dont think this is going to happen. The alignment that is supposedly going to happen is the sun will alighn with the center of the milkyway, which would not effect anything. I have doubts that this information is even correct.
What so many people are freaked out about with 2012 is that its the end of the mayan calendar and the mayans supposedly could predict all kinds of crazy stuff.

Any way the whole 2012 thing is a bunch of urban legends. If the mayans were so wise, where are they? Did they build space ships and escape the spanish conquistadors?

An alignment happened in 2000 or 2001 May 5th I beleive. I remember as I read in 1997 about it. I read how it would end the world. I was like you. I spent the next few years of my life worrying about it.Iwas a wreck a lot of the time. The planets aligned (it is possible) and nothing happened at all. We are here now. Who aethese Scientists? You have to be objective. Some scientists may call themselves that but it does not mean they have any real qualifications. A good web site to ask good space questions is www.bautforum.com a good bunch of guys to answer proper questions. Many of them are REAL scientists there.

2012 is by many separate sources of wisdom seen as being a portal into what some people call the Golden Age. 2012 marks, according to the The Mayan Calendar, the ending of Time as we know it and as something old die something new will be born. The Mayan perspective of 2012 and the current times we live in is very similar to the view of Kalki and the Golden Age Foundation who is also co-organising the Oneness Festival.

The concept of a coming Golden Age is widely recognised among many spiritual authors, spiritual traditions and teachers.

"I think that by 2012 you will have people that are enlightened (open, honest, caring, loving, united to the divine) and those that still seek humanity's lower natures (suffering, misery, hate, separation from the divine) but at least the scale may be tipping more toward enlightened."

I agree with Justin.

nrao has some good points.

Perhaps Porfis can present to us the website which purports an alignment of the planets. I'm sure NASA would LOVE to hear from you.

My advice to the questioner is STAY OFF OF 2012 WEBSITES!!!!!!!!

Go spend some time in the nonfiction part of your local library. In it you will find books written by John Major Jenkins. The only reputable author on this subject.

Get a grip.

No. the full declare that the Earth replaced into going to end in 2012 is in accordance with a *misinterpretation* of the Mayan calender, which looks to those that do no longer comprehend the thank you to verify it to end in 2012. truly, the Mayan calender is a cyclic calender, meaning it runs in a cycle. (very like a vehicle's odometer, which, whilst it reaches 999,999 miles, will click returned over and initiate at 000,000 returned.) the persons who're claiming that the Mayans anticipated the top of the international are interpreting the Mayan calender as though it replaced right into a linear calender like ours. it somewhat is not. The Mayans did no longer are looking forward to the top of the international. they did no longer make any claims of the form. the persons who say that the Mayans suggested something like that are people who comprehend no longer something correct to the Mayan custom, do no longer comprehend the thank you to verify the Mayan calender, and have not have been given any thought what they're speaking approximately. the two way, why every person would connect any form of magnitude to a perceived "prediction" made by skill of an historic civilization that would no longer even are looking forward to it somewhat is very own downfall is previous logical comprehension. (no longer that any end-time theorists interior the background of mankind are properly-known for their good judgment or comprehension skills.) it somewhat is somewhat baffling that it somewhat is Christians who seem to have grabbed directly to this, and use it to returned up their faith's end-time myth, whilst below the different situations they might say that the Mayans ideals have been "fake ideals". merely interior the previous few hundred years, there have been 1000's of end-time predictions made...NONE of that have come genuine. Why on earth people do no longer learn from this unbroken trend of failure, and nevertheless panic whilst a sparkling end-time prediction comes alongside is previous me. The human race truly desires to snap out of it, initiate employing their heads, end being so ridiculously gullible, and end paying for into this superstitious nonsense. (And no, the Mayans did no longer are looking forward to something correct to the twin towers.)

oh COMPLETELY no !!

This is just their THEORY . They PREDICT things such as this but there is no proof of it. They are going by it's path, alot can happen to the path of anything in space ..
1..another object might hit it and throw it off course
2.. stellar pertubation
3.. it might get caught in some other planet's gravity and either become a moon or crash into it. As long as jupiter is around ( depending where it is in it's orbit, and since it's gravity is stronger the object would get pulled in that planet first because it would have to travel by jupiter first .

So How do the planets protect Earth from asteroids and comets?

The short answer is that most of the planets do not protect us; however, Jupiter deflects many new comets as they enter the inner reaches of the solar systm from the Oort Cloud or Kuiper Belts. Many incoming comets are accelerated by Jupiter into hyperbolic orbits, and so ejected out of our region, or, conversely, are slowed down so as to become inner system objects and fall into the sun. Shoemaker Levy 9, by contrast, was ripped apart by Jupiter and ended its journey at that location, thanks to Jupiter's massive gravity. Without Jupiter, we would suffer a flux of comets maybe 100 times the current rate; it is questionable whether such a flux would have been compatible with the evolution of advanced life forms! The Inner asteroid belts, however, may yield new impactors of the Apollo, Amor, and Aten types by collision/breakups .

that was fun to type out ! I love astronomy!

Nah. Nothing like that. We're going to have a near-miss with an asteroid, and the Mayan calendar is going to end.

The asteroid is going to miss us, and the Mayans need to chisel a new calendar - that's all. Gravity will remain the same, war will still be going on, hunger, space shots, babies born, etc.

Carry on... Move along, people.... nothin' to see here.
