At the undergraduate level, a large number of courses at Ivy League schools are taught by graduate students rather than professors. Small liberal arts colleges are better in my opinion for undergraduate coursework, while Ivy League schools are ideal for graduate study.

Essentially students feel that they must attend an Ivy League institution because of prestige and thinking that they have a leg up compared to the general population of college students. There are actually no difference between an Ivy League education than with a public honors college education. In my humblest opinion, I believe Ivy League is overrated. I have family that attended there and they did not get any better an education than you would, say, the University of Florida where I attend.

Maybe it's the prestige that goes with it, they want to try and go for the best that they possibly can so strive for Ivy League. However I am a student and neither I or any of my friends were even thinking of Ivy League schools. We know that's above our heads. Realistically speaking, you can just go to a school that has your program for much less anyway. Here University of Florida is our "ivy league' as that's like the top school in my state. So all the top students in our classes, if not going out of state, would just go there.
