Since both of those expressions are equal to y, they're equal to each other.

y = 0.2 x -1000
y = 0.25 x - 2250

thus,

0.2 x -1000 = 0.25 x - 2250
0.05x = 1250
x = 1250 * 20
x = 25,000

knowing x, you can solve for y using either original equation:

y = 0.2 x -1000
y = 0.2 * 25000 - 1000
y = 5000 - 1000
y = 4,000

You should then use the other equation to test your answer:

y = 0.25 x - 2250
4000 =? 0.25 * 25000 - 2250
4000 =? 6250 - 2250
4000 = 4000

0.2 x - 1000 = 0.25 x - 2250
2250 - 1000 = 0.25x - 0.2x
1250 = 0.05 x
125000 = 5x
x = 25000

y = 0.2 x 25000 - 1000
y = 4000

x = 25000 , y = 4000

0.2x - 1,000 = 0.25x - 2,250
1,250 = 0.05x
x = 25,000

y = 0.2(25,000) - 1,000
y = 4,000

Answer: x = 25,000, y = 4,000

Proof (2nd equation):
4,000 = 0.25(25,000) - 2,250
4,000 = 6,250 - 2,250
4,000 = 4,000
