Quite a few outwardly shy boys have blogs; they might talk about their crushes there. It's generally easier to talk about sensitive subjects like that online than IRL. Worm the blog url out of a friend of the boy; that's how mine got around.

If he doesn't have a blog, then there will be generally clues like acting awkward around you, or even more shy. Even better, work up the courage to come out and ask. You never know, just don't get personally offended if the answer is no. Bonne chance, et bon courage !
