I am 19, I want to own a gun and learn how to handle it safely but I dont know how to achieve this. When I typed in "New York Gun Laws" into google some said that you cant own a gun in NYC if you are under 21. I am really frustrated because I only want to own a gun because I happend to have brought some dangerous people in my life and I have no way of knowing if they want to break in and kill me or something. I am not parinoid, I am just someone who wants to own a gun for legitamte reasons and there are so many obstacles in the way, if someone has some advice please let me know what to do!!

I don't think you can have a handgun, but a rifle might be ok. Don't know for sure, not from NYC, but I remember reading something to that effect.

New York City's Sullivan act is in effect ...
"In New York City, the licensing authority is the police department, which rarely issues carry licenses to anyone except retired police officers".
So- look at a shotgun- 18" barrel, maybe a 20 gauge if a 12 gauge is not manageable. Just don"t get caught carrying it under your coat.

You can purchase a rifle at 18 but can't legally own a handgun until you are 21.

Edit; this is a federal not a state law.

I recommend that you learn Aikido. If you own a gun, you are far more likely to end up with a shooting victim inside your own home.

A skilled Aikidoist can handle most situations skillfully. If someone wants to shoot you through a window, there's simply not much you can do to prevent that.

I'd visit several dojos and see what instructor and philosophy works for you.
