I answered a question earlier that made me think about this. I remember so many things that used to scare the daylights out of us when we were kids but are so humorous now.

One of my grandmothers favorites was

I look back on that and laugh, my grandmother never laid a hand on any of us, but I remember when she got mad enough to say that, we were worried, lol

my grandparents spoke polish so that probably saved me from some childhood scarring but my parents used the old, "don't make me pull over" and "wait till your father gets home". she only pulled over once. and boy was it memorable...
