I've had oil and natural gas furnaces and prefer the natural gas to oil. I always found the the oil heat forced air furnace left a funny smell in the house which I found unpleasant. Where I live, natural gas is actually cheaper than oil and I don't have to worry about having the tank filled before the chilly season. I like the natural gas because I pay for what I use as I use it and don't get a big old bill like I used to when I filled the tank. All that being said, propane is even cheaper than natural gas, but you still have to have a big old ugly tank somewhere out in the yard (at least my oil tank was underground) and you still get the big old bill when you have it filled. Our utility provider is running ads right now hyping the fact that natural gas is cleaner burning and "greener" than oil.

Whether it is cheaper or not will depend on the cost of both types of energy in your area. No one on this list can tell you that. You will have to make those inquiries locally.

Both are fossil fuels and both put greenhouse gasses into the environment. Hi-efficiency furnaces are available for both fuel types so they are pretty much the same, percentage-wise. Gas furnaces are usually smaller than oil fired and there is no need for a tank taking up space in your basement. Also, you can run out of fuel oil but not natural gas.

Oil........
pros, cost less on consumption of fuel, burns at a higher temp and is more efficient.
cons, noisy, smells, less greener, you need to have it cleaned out every yr.you need to maintain a tank, keep it filled, sometimes they leak etc.
Natural Gas
Pros, more greener, doesn't make the loud bang when it fires off.no smell.
Cons, gas leaks, cost more for fuel.gas company scams you into thinking they are more efficient 90% etc.but if the gas cost 2 times as much and you get a gas boiler that's 10 % more efficient its still costing you alot more
I work for the 4th largest natural gas co in the usa National Grid for 15 yrs.I also general contracted building my own house.I use oil heat, and Natural gas for outdoor grill, dryer, cook top and fireplace.
I compare my heating cost to my neighbours who heat with Natural gas and they are paying almost twice as much. And not to mention,my hose is bigger than theirs.

I would go with the NG. There are less problems with it. You don't have to worry about getting the oil tank filled in the middle of the winter. the gas is cleaner and cheaper at this time, I believe. The main thing is that you don't have to worry about it.

good luck.

Gas has to be cheaper. Our home heating oil bill is $400 per month.

Definitely natural gas. It is cleaner.
If you ever had to go the expense of removing an oil tank....headache!
Hard to find well experienced service people for oil too.
In the long haul I would venture to guess gas is the most economical and 'greenest' fuel.

Go natural all the way. It's cheaper and cleaner and costs less to maintain.
