Move him into a larger tank before it reaches 5 inches. If it is a Comet Goldfish, it can get up to 2 feet long and live for more than 15-20 years. Fancy Goldfish will live for about 15 years and get about 8-10 inches long. This site is a great help http://fishlesscycling.com/forum/index.php.

If he's the only fish in there, probably about a year. Depending on how fast he grows and what kind of food you feed him. But goldfish live a long time, and a ten gallon should handle him for a little bit. Just make sure to keep the tank clean, goldfish give off alot of ammonia and nitrates which can make it hard for them to breath. Which is the problem when there is too many in a tank, or not enough tank for one fish.

pick_up_a_cow: no fish does grow up to the size of the container. fish normally grow their whole life. In containers too small they have growth disorders and deformities so by chosing a tank too small you produce fishes with disabilities.
maddie c: nope, a lifespan of a goldfish is about 20 years (!!!). if they die earlier it is mostly the fault of their keeper.

Until he reaches about 3 inches. If it's a fancy goldy, then once it reaches 3 inches in length, invest in a 20 gallon for just one. If it's a slim body and when it reaches 3 inches, invest in a 30 for just the one.

Goldfish grow to fit the size of their container so he won't ever be too big for the tank.

'Till he dies. If he's in good health, being fed, and his tank is being filtered clean, you can keep him until the end of is life.
