To run a still means that you are making moonshine. It is an illegal way to make booze. Back during the prohibition it was huge, because the government outlawed alcohol. It is something that occurs to this day. Traditionally, it is thought of as being back in the woods somewhere that people won't find it. For at least 2 reasons. First, you don't want someone else to be drinking your hooch, and secondly, you don't want the law to find it.

To run a still is to brew illegal hooch "moonshine" in the backwoods. A dreadful crime in the eyes of the Revenue. Hope this helps.
