What is happening in our society today? People are isolated from one another, families live miles apart, children are exposed to the internet and the dangers of chat rooms and left to their own devices, kids are'nt allowed to play in the streets anymore, we want so many material things to make us "happier" - sometimes I feel like throwing the TV, computer and videos games out the window! The media has a lot to answer for - the influence on our youngsters is outrageous! Parents have to work, work, work to get extra money for all these material things and the kids want more and more.........when is it all going to stop dead and go full circle back to the basics of life?? Oh, and we know FAR TOO MUCH about EVERYTHING, this illness that illness, its all heightened - no wonder 1 in 4 people in Britain are suffering from depression and mental health problems! I feel overwhelmed by how society has changed and its very worrying for the next generation.

I reckon that at some point we will run out of coal/oil and there will be alot less power so we'll be back to fires and horse and carts cos even with wind turbines there will not be enough power. Also there are too many people in the world we are soon to run out of water/food and materials we will be back to farming /war/stealing all fighting for survival. I know what you mean about everyone being depressed i think the world has gone the wrong way and we have so little control will we ever break free or will we all end up ID chipped like animals and watched every moment of the day, i think tax is far to high and our goverments are rubish doing their own thing in the end of the day family/people are important and materials arn't everything you have to remember that for yourself and hope for the best

It has to start with us. Don't let your kids play video games or sit at the computer for hours at a time. Play board games, read together (I mean the same books, no matter what your child's age is) it gives you something in common and to discuss. Sit at the table and eat meals together. We watch the news in our house all the time and discuss our various opinions on subjects. When the kids were little I greatly influenced them with my opinions, isn't that part of being a parent? We would watch movies and explain the difference between acting and real life. You don't go to bed with perfect strangers, not everyone is beautiful on the outside, some people have problems that cannot be solved in 2 hours. We need to swing the pendulum back.

Yes, I think it will. Everything tends to swing on the pendulum. Look at the generations we've seen. It's American to find something that works better and take it to extreme until finally the pendulum cannot handle it anymore and begins to swing the other way....and eventually back to legal and moral puritan values.
You have alot of insight. Take that and find the middle and teach your kids the be good observers and judges.

There is a very old sociological and economic construct called: The atomization of society.
The Atomization of Society occurs when people are distanced from family, friends, neighbors, resources, government, and lose a sense of identity and loyalty with the neighborhood. A sense of community is destroyed as a result of socio-economic policies, such as welfare, forced busing, rising rents, pushed out of neighborhoods, condominium displacement, loss of job benefits or loss of retirement, etc.
The USA is being 'atomized'.

I certainly agree with you sister! The world is going full circle and by the look of thing, it is just the beginning and things are going to get worse. The problem with society today, we are being ruled by greed, we want more and better what ever the consequences.

As energy becomes more expensive (look at how oil prices are exploding, and the effort to reduce greenhouse gases will accelerate that), communities will have to become more local -- more tightly-knit and self-sufficient. This may reduce the individual isolation that you see, and may help to revive the primacy of family...if we don't all drown under melting ice caps...
