Find out what you need to know by asking the coach. Use this page to start working on the basics:

For tryouts, go in there with a positive attitude and be ready to try everything they tell you with a genuine smile on your face. Wear school colors and put your hair back nice and neat. No make up unless it is light and natural looking.

You will definitely need to attend your school's try out clinic. Many schools have a routine they teach. In addition, you will need to learn jumps and read as much as possible about stunting so that when the coach tries you in a position you will have an idea what they're talking about. Also, many areas have private cheer instruction, or all star gyms that may offer cheerleading clinics. There are also videos available to teach skills at home. Good luck. I always tell my little ones - you have to be having fun with it or you're in the wrong sport!

My daughter is a high school varsity cheerleader and the competition is rough..you not only have to be able to tumble (back handsprings, etc) but you also have to be able to dance, pick up cheers quickly and SMILE SMILE SMILE...

My daughter takes cheer tumbling, dance, lift weights and does some modeling (to learn how to put on makeup, smile, hold herself, etc)

A cheerleader is not just someone who yells and wears a short skirt...they are athletes of the highest caliber...they represent their school and their sport....

well where you're taking tumbling, do they have cheer classes? In cheer classes, you learn both cheers and tumbling. For cheerleader tryouts in high school you have to cheer and tumble and it depends on how well you do both as to whether or not you make it on the team. hope i helped and good luck! :-D

Contact the coach. Go to your school atheletics site and find her (or his) email. They can tell you days for practices and what you need to do.
