You need to take it to an actual mechanic and have them run a code on it. Try to do it when the light is on but even if it is not on they should be able to pull the codes off. Most likely it is something as simple as the air filter becoming clogged or trash in your fuel lines but a mechanic can diagnose this for you. Also you can buy a GM Code key and the repair manual for your car and run the codes yourself. Thiswould be the least inexpensive method and you should be able to buy the key at a parts supply store.

Usually GM will catch up to you with a notification through the mail once the title is processed with your name & address. The used car dealership technically doesnt have to follow those rules of a recall like a GM dealership would have to. Next, it would depend on your VIN as well since not all 2002 Grand Prix's are included in this campaign. Yours could not fall within the VIN breakpoint & not need this fix. You can just wait for the letter to come into the mail or if you havent gotten one yet, it may mean yours isnt on the list that needs it done. The VIN breakpoint is 2F100018 --- 2F293183. So if your last 8 digits of the VI?N doesnt fall in between those 2 numbers, it means yours doesnt need it nor will GM or the dealership change that But, you could go get your oil change at a GM dealership & they are suppose to look up any open campaigns on the vehicle when they write it up & if any are open, they are suppose to inform you that it has an OPEN Recall & it should be repaired when your ready to have it done or if parts are on hand which if they arent, they would have to order them & have you come back to have it done. I didnt see a CUT OFF date on it like some have. Usually SAFETY CAMPAIGNS, there is no time limit on. What is your last 8 digits of the VIN??

Bring it to a tranny shop like Lee Miles they do free computer scans have them check the computer for you. If it goes on after you drive for a wile than it could be a bad O2 sensor or a bad air temp sensor. If you put an intake on the car and forgot to put on the air temp sensor than the check engine light will come on. I have a 1993 grand prix and the same thing happened to me. When I was cleaning the air box I put on the air hose but forgot to plug-in the connector for the air temp sensor. Also the 3.4L duel twin cam and the 3100 are two completely different engines.

If you take it to a dealership and specify to them to ONLY run diagnostics, it should only run you about $50 and they can pinpoint EXACTLY what the problem is. I had a problem with my 96 GTP a few years back and the dealership took 3 days to figure out what the problem was because the codes they were getting were running them in circles, but it was still only the $45 diagnostic fee they promised.

It could be any of dozens of things. Without a diagnostics scanner, all you can get is wild guesses. You will end up throwing money at it replacing good parts hoping that you stumble across the bad part.
Try another auto parts store. Maybe they have the correct diagnostic scanner to get the trouble codes from the computer.
You may need to resort to bringing it to the GM dealer if all else fails.

My Pontiac Grand Am did the same thing I found out it was a fuel injector going out I took it in and had them tell me which one it was and I replace it and the light hasn't came on any more.
Doing the code check it doesn't pin point the exact area or reason the light comes on.
