Ok in Order of the Pheonix (the book) Dolores Umbridge reveals that she sent dementors after Harry at the beginning, my question is did she send the dementors after Harry to get harry expelled because she knew harry would perform illegal underage magic by summoning a patronous, or was her intention to have Harry's soul sucked out by the dementors?

Umbridge truly wanted to discredit Harry Potter, as the Ministry of Magic had been trying to do so all summer long. The use of underage magic (a blatant disregard for rules) would have done the trick, but also claiming that dementors were attacking him when it was common knowledge that the Ministry contolled them at Azkaban would have made Harry seem crazy. If the dementors happened to suck out Harry's soul, it wouldn't have been the best scenerio, as an inquiry would have to happen, but as a high ranking official, Umbridge would have remained untarnished even if Harry were "kissed" by a Dementor.

Oh, and expulsion from Hogwarts due to underage magic would have also taken Harry out of Dumbledore's watchful eye and prevented Harry from using magic (broken wand would result). The boy who lived would be utterly disgraced and would become a nonsense figure in the wizarding world.

In essence, both possibilities were considered by Umbridge and it was deemed by her evil mind the perfect solution to the ministry's problem!

Hope that helps!

Umbridge knew she would be posted to the Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching position, and she knew that the Ministry's reason for sending her there was so she could continue re-hashing the Ministry's "Voldemort has NOT returned" party-line position. In addition, she knew that Harry would not hesitate to speak against that position, so she already saw him as a threat.

Umbridge's motive behind sending the Dementors after Harry was to remove the threat he posed to her. Whether he got Dementor-kissed or expelled for conjuring a Patronus didn't matter because they would both accomplish the same thing.

Both, I think. I believe her initial intention was to get him to perform underage magic and into a lot of trouble, therefore completely discrediting him as a "good boy" in the eyes of the ministry and the wizarding world. This did happen, he spent the entire book 5 fighting that image. However, if the dementors did succeed in getting his soul, I don't think she would have complained. Umbridge thought Harry was a huge threat to the ministry and thus, Cornelius Fudge, the man she butt kissed to no end for career advancements.

I think her motive was just to undermine his credibility. The Ministry was denying Voldemort's return and the only people really disputing that were Harry (because he'd seen it) and Dumbledore (because he believed Harry). That there would be dementors in a muggle neighborhood was hard to believe, and Harry would have a hard time convincing anyone of that. I think it was just another step to make Harry look like a liar without her really caring what the ultimate result would be.

I believe that Umbridge sent the dementors after Harry to suck out his soul because she would have wanted him to stop talking about how Voldemort was back. She gets very frustrated with Harry and Dumbledore's Army at Hogwarts, which might mean she was very annoyed by the people who agreed with Harry and thought that Voldemort was back.

Umbridge is psychotic, sadistic, and power hungry. I don't think she cared what happened to Harry as long as it got him to stop saying that LV was back. She is one of those people that feels that "the end justifies the means" and has no conscience about how they go about it.
She would have been more than happy to become a death eater, not sure why she is not listed as one....

That's a good question. Most likely to get him expelled b/c she may have known he could and would use the patronus charm. But I doubt she would have hesitated to have his soul sucked out either.

I'm thinking Umbridge thought that Harry was telling lies about "He Who Must Not Be Named" and harming the ministy, so she prob'ly sent them to "stop him" not really caring how they did it. Really mean lady... cute cat plates though.

I don't think she cared, she just didn't want him at school.
