There is "book learning" and then there is the innate "common sense", which can also be described as a survival skills base of creative thought and problem solving capabilities.
There are a lot of people with high school diplomas running small companies because they have the ability to learn new skills and work with people. They understand the concepts of cost analysis and the steps to get to where they want to be from where they are, and what risks to take.
You will see a lot of PhDs working for the post office because they either didn't have what it takes to make a living in their degree fields, or could not deal with the responsibility.
I know some highly educated folks that cannot think their way out of a paper bag. I have one near-genius level friend with a bachelor's from Rice University in... psychology and filmmaking. Wound up in the handcrafting business. Didn't understand that in a given marketplace with a bunch of people making and selling essentially the same stuff, you don't share any personal information on yourself with the competition, no matter how "nice" that person seems at first. 20 years and she STILL doesn't understand that.

It would seem that in some cases book sense and common sense does not exist in the same person. Perhaps it is due to the fact that they spent so much time with their noses buried in books they didn't have a chance to learn and grow in the real world. I think this is more true for those that went to college straight out of high school as opposed to those of us who took time off first.

Common sense is important, but not a part of the curriculum. Sometimes, coursework can be so theoretical that it omits practical knowledge entirely.

Some really don't, they probably just coasted through school and didn;t have to put any effort into it cuz mommy and daddy probably paid for it all...You don't have to be smart to go to college, alot of people just do the minimum just to pass, but they still get their degree.

Degrees don't really say how smart a person is, just how good of a student they are. Intellegence helps though.
