The Dow that many refer to is a stock market index that was created many years ago to guage overall industries in the stock market. 30 companies were picked that would be an indicie to the whole industrial stock market. Since there has been a major change in what is considered industries from then to now there has in turn been a change in the 30 companies represented in the index. Many of the original heavy industry companies are no longer in business.
The company that Fox is buying has the indecies as a small part of the company. The Dow Jones Company is a finacial and publishing company. The main part of the publishing is the well respected Wall Street Journal. There are also broadcasting elements to the company. Fox is seen as wanting to compete with channels such as CNBC with this purchase and on the internet to expand the FOX brand.

The Dow Jones Report tracks stock purchases and sale prices -- it's an index that many people use as an overall way of measuring the robustness of the economy.

The Dow Jones index is a group of stocks that are suppose to represent a cross section of American industry. When the Dow goes up that is an indication that the economy as a whole is doing well. I am not sure of all the stocks in it, I know walmart and AOL are included.

I didn't know it was an entity that could be purchased. I am in the dark, too. What I understand is that the Dow is a mixture of the top 30 industrial companies and the NASDAQ is for companies that are Internet or tecnichal industry related.

Its an average of the most widely held and traded stocks. It serves only as a guidleine for the overall market, because in theory the most widely traded big companies will reflect the trends of the market as whole. Usually fairly accurate. The companies in the index are constantly changing ased on which companies are the most traded.
