x² + 12x + 36 - 36
(x + 6)² - 36

rules for completing the square

take half of the x coefficient

square it

then add

(1/2) * 12 = 6

6^2 = 36

Therefore (x^2 +12x + 36) or (x+6)^2

(x+a)^2: you need 2a = 12 so a = 6, and a^2 =36, so the missing element = 36.
