Two weeks ago i started giving my 4 month old rice cereal. I am wondering if it is ok to start letting her try new foods, and if so which ones? I know i should wait about a week in between new foods to see if there is an alergic reaction, but after onlytwo weeks of rice cereal can she try other foods?

Yes, as long as she has done fine on the cereal, you can try other foods. Keep in mind, at this age solids are more about exploration, practice, fun, and developing a good relationship with food for when it is needed for nutrition in a couple months. As far as what to start with, it actually it does not matter what you feed first or for how long as far as fruits vrs veggies. They each have important nutrients not found in the other and are both required for a balanced diet. As long as you only introduse 1 new food at a time and give at least 3-4 days untill the next food, any single ingredient food is fine. I would recomend going back and forth between the groups as you introduce each item (veggie fruit veggie fruit veggie fruit) and so on untill they have all been tried. Then you can give any you want in any combo you want. Babies do not fully develope taste buds untill the 7-8 month mark, and can only tell bitter and sweet. At this stage it is all about texture. If your baby seems to not like a food, try changing the texture by adding cereal and or water. Make sure to offer enought of each kind of food for a balanced diet to prevent constipation or the runs, as well as breast milk or formula. Good luck, solids are sooo much fun!

By the way, as far as the AAP goes, it is a recomendation, not a rule. The AAP changes its opinions so often it is not worth trying to keep up. 2 years ago, they were "recomending" cereal in bottles. Now it is as taboo as rum for teething babies. If a baby is hungry, feed them. Babies need the calories they store in early month for growth spurts and when they become active. The AAP is actually in the research phase of changing their stance on this very issue right now. They are testing to see if babies started on solids at 4 months, vrs 5 and vrs 6 have easier time with growth spurts, mobility, and teething.

Branch off into oatmeal cereal and barley as well. Save cereal for breakfast and before bed. During the day try the 1st foods and work up from that. I always do 1/2 veggie and 1/2 fruit at each meal, once you are sure that they have no reactions to that food.
You can start the other foods anytime now.

Also, try the jar cereal. Soo much better than the box stuff...... I know it costs more but, right now Target has a coupon for $1 off 2 Gerber baby items and the jars are .52 so you can get a lot of jars for .02. I bought 22 jars of different cereal and spent under $3.00. It's a Target Web Coupon.

It all depends on how well she is taking in the rice cereal. I wouldn't move too quickly. I started my son on cereal when he was 4 months. I gave him 2 tbsp at night and then worked my way up to twice a day(breakfast and evening snack before bed) Then started with beginner veggies at 5 1/2 months (carrotts, peas, beans, sweet potatoes). I did a new food every 4 days or so. My son is almost 7 months old right now.

I started my 4 month old on fruit and veg purees a week after starting her on babyrice and I left it a couple of days between new foods before introducing a new one. I also varied the foods she was ok with by mixing them e.g. swede and apple together is nice and then sweet potato bulks out other veggie mixes.

Work your way thru all the different kinds of cereal first. Then start green veggies. Then fruits. You don't want to give fruit or sweet veggies like carrots or sweet potatoes before you give the green ones. Babies like sweet stuff, and if you give the sweet ones before the not sweet ones, you're going to have a harder time getting them to like the "icky" ones.

According to the American Academy of Pediatricians it is recommended that NO solid foods be given until 6 month of age. This includes rice cereal.... This is a fairly new announcement (last year or so) and hasn't been publicized as much as it should have.

I recommend sticking to breast milk or formula until 6 months.

I was to to get them used to cereal starting at 4 months for a couple months to get them used to the textures and give their tummy time to adjust to solids. My son was off and on liking cereal the first week or two. Just give a little at a time, starting it liquidy at first and slowly making it more solid.
At 6 months you should start on green vegies for maybe a couple weeks: Green beans, peas, brocolli. Then introduce orange vegies. Wait on fruits for a month or two to give them time to get a taste for vegies and not just want fruits. Then after Vegies and Fruits, introduce meats. Our one year old LOVES his vegies, of course he loves his fruits too. He just all around loves to eat.
I hope this helped a little

You can go ahead and start trying new foods now. Doctors say to only try one new food in a week.
