In New Jersey, it seems like we never get tornadoes. But if we do, they are usually F0 or F1 tornadoes that only break branches. Obviously they are dangerous but I still think they're interesting.

I live in Iowa and see at least one each year. There tends to be some less violent ones, but a couple of years ago, a small town near where I live was virtually leveled by an F4 tornado..the funnel was actually bigger than the whole town, at least 1/2 mile wide.

Tornados usually form along the boundry between humid, warm air and drier, cooler air. This boundry is called the 'dry line' and you commonly find it in northern TX, KS, OK, NE, CO, IA.

But anywhere you have that confluence of warm moist air and cooler, dry air you create vertical lift, instability, lowered condensation levels and all the other factors that go into tornado formation.

Unfortunately, NJ doesn't have a reliable source of cool dry air, so tornado formation is rare and those that do form won't have the energy or instability profiles to become raging F5s.

I have never seen a tornado, but then again, I have never lived in a trailer. If you want to see lots of tornadoes, you should move into a trailer park or a mobile home. Basically if your house is on stilts you may as well put in an application to FIMA now, that tornado will get you sooner or later.

I was at a school in Kansas once when there was a tornado. It passed right over the top of us and it sounded like a train plowing across the sky. It didn't rip off the roof where we were, but it did shread the gym roof and two of the four walls. It was scary, but cool at the same time, however, alott of people had property damage.

Being from southwest Oklahoma, I have seen several, the closest I have been was about a mile and a half and that was wayyyyyyyy to close. A friend and I was out drinking some beer when the tornado formed. We drove behind it , staying a couple of mile away. AWESOME site to see. No one was injured !!

Yep, living in IA we see LOTS of tornadoes.

I saw my first when I was about 6 years old. I haven't seen a major one since, but have been not far from areas that have been hit by tornadoes.
The destruction can be crazy. One news story I saw recently, the whole house was blown down, but one wall still stood with pictures still hanging on the wall!

Well, I don't live in a trailer...But I have stared at one coming directly at me not more than a few blocks away. Only to watch it break apart before it crossed the road. It wasn't very large, but we did have a mini-outbreak over that weekend. Decatur, IL 1996

I was in one in 1974 and it was scarey. It blew over trees and blew apart boatdocks like they were toys. I've seen another one but it was about 3 miles away.
My parents were in one in 1949 and liek 30 people died. These were in Missouri.
We aren't like Kansas or Oklahoma but where I live now (Arkansas) has some bad ones, and so does Missouri.
They are so interesting but so scarey too.
