I made a radio telescope when I was in high school, and it could detect the Milky Way. We didn't have satellite dishes back then, or low-noise high-frequency FET amplifiers. You should be able to do better.

One thing you might consider is making a radio interferometer using two dishes. This will allow you to be more certain that the signals you are receiving are from space, rather than interference.

You don't really need a drive for the dish or dishes---you can simply point them at the sky and let the radio sources transit across your beam.

There are a few books about making amateur radio telescopes you could read.

If you mean the kind of dish used for satellite tv, no it wouldn't work very well unless you could come up with some kind of motor drive that would keep the dish moving in such a way as to stay locked onto a satellite moving around Earth.

In order to gather any meaningful signal strength the idea will be to have as much dish area as possible. I doubt that a TV dish will be big enough to gather a usable signal.

Any posters, make sure you realize this person is making a radio telescope...

Yes, it should. Note that most of the modern dish antennas are not symmetrical. The focal point is off center. Make sure you put your feed horn or receiving element in the right place. It may take some creative work to do that.
