You son your probably love to see the resort, but I'm not so sure it would be a very good idea to go there over Grand Floridian. You are going from the top of the line Disney hotel, to the lowest Disney hotel, and the oldest of the value resorts.
If you are on a budget the values will do the job, they are nice, clean and everything, but aside from that they don't offer much. For most people it is all they need, but if you like everything Grand Floridian has to offer, I really wouldn't recommend the value resorts. If you were wanting to stay at a value, I think Pop Century is far better than the Sports.
The one thing I dont' like about the values is that they only have the food court for dining, the food is pretty good, considering cost, but the Grand Floridian has nice choices and nicer food.
If it were me, I would just take your son to see the resort, all the All Star resorts tend to be a huge hit for the younger kids because they find the icons amazing, but I don't think I would stay there. It is not that the All Star Sports isn't nice, all Disney resorts compare in quality, you just lose a lot of the extras that you find at moderates and deluxes.
Hope this helps!

If you are use to the Grand Floridian you will be disappointed in the Sports Resort. I would suggest staying at the Grand Floridian and taking a bus from one of the parks to the hotel and just walk around the lobby and the different buildings. Maybe take some pictures in front of some the giant sports equiptment. The outside and the lobby are really the best parts of the All Star resorts anyway. You can even use the pool there if you wanted. You might want to take a look around the Wide World of Sports Complex.

Lisa summed it up best. The All Star resorts are fine but compared to the Grand Floridian you might as well be sleeping in a tent. As for the sports, other than pictures and giant footballs and basketballs, etc... there isn't a lot there. You can stay in a nicer resort and take the bus over to check out the All Star Sports.

We stayed there last August. I don't spend much time in my room or around the resort while I am there, its mainly a place to shower and sleep, I spend all my time at the parks so I don't bother with the expensive resorts.
All Star Sports is a Value resort as you know, it is clean and you will get that excellent Disney service. It is the first on the bus route to the parks also. The rooms are small and basic, it is more motel like, and there is a food court and no sit down restaurant. If you are used to the high end places you might be disappointed. It is sport themed but I'm not sure a two year old will get much out of it. It works for us but like I said I dont spend a lot of time in the room.
I recommend it for anyone who is on a tight budget, I do like Pop Century better but its also a newer place.

I would not recommend that to anyone who is willing and able to pay for something better...
I used to stay there. The rooms are small. Can be lots of noise (especially around the football field). Big overnight field trips from schools tend to land there.
And if you are one of those that have the Magic Kingdom as their primary draw, you'll find the relatively long busride a huge step down from just being able to jump on the monorail (though it is closer to the other 3). And if you leave the parks at closing, there's often a huge wait for a bus back.
To go along with others, you'd be better off just visiting and doing a walk around.

If you are used to the Grand Floridian then you will be settling for less with the All Star Sports. Don't get me wrong its nice hotel but nothing compariable to the Grand Floridian.
