Those people that look at these kinds of things believe the Yankees needed to trade for a solid starting pitcher to help them in the playoff race. The problem is that no one was available to help. Abreu is in the last year of his contract at $22 million and no one would pick up that contract while Damon is having a down year at age 34 and they would have a hard time moving him as well. I would have to agree with the basics of your other statements.

The trade deadline is all about grabbing a rental player to help you this year, or bolstering a stronger team for next year. When you go after players and all your deals slip through the cracks and you move noone, especially when you are down 7 games, you are a trade deadline loser.

that's one way to look at it. Of course we won't know if keeping those young players was worth it or not until they've played at the major league level for a while.
Give some examples of young players that the Yanks have traded away at the deadline that have ended up producing at the major league level.

i mean they didn't address what really could help them, they could still catch the red sox, but as of now they'll have to score 7 or 8 runs a game to do that, which they are capable of, but they are an older ballclub and could wear down
but if your 7 games back and want to make the playoffs, you'd think youd have to do something worthwhile at the deadline

You didn't address the conspiracy across MLB to screw the Yankees.
Proof: The Rangers wanted Melky Cabrera AND Joba Chamberlain for Gagne, but were willing to take much less from the Red Sox.

Cause all they did was get a Wilson Betemit so if Rodriguez leaves after this year they have a good replacement, but they needed to get a SP and maby some bull-pen help.

THE SPANK MEES ARE LOSSSSEEEEERRRRRSSSSS
WHAT DID THEY GET... WILSON BETEMIT, HE'S ON HIS 3RD TEAM IN 13-14 MONTHS. ERIC GAGNE WAS THERE, MARK TEIXEIRA, OCTAVIO DOTEL.
THEY COULD HAVE TRADED FARNSWORTH FOR DOTEL OR GAGNE. BUT THE PROBLEM IS ALL THOSE HIGH PRICED CONTRACTS. NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE ON THE MONEY & NEITHER DO THE SPANKMEES
I'M GLAD TEAMS ARE NOT TRADING FOR THOSE PLAYERS CUZ NOW THE SPANKMEES WILL PAY 6 TRILLION DOLLARS IN LUXURY TAXES & SOMEONE WHO INVESTS SMART LIKE THE TIGERS WILL BE ABLE TO RETAIN THEIR FREE AGENTS!!!
