Try just saying you're sorry and ask her if she wants to talk about her mom. Alot of times when someone is grieving the best thing to do is to be there for them and let them talk. There's not many things you can say to help someone feel better - other than "I'm sorry you feel bad" and "It must be so hard to lose someone you love so much".

My best friend died last year and it was really hard - especially because few people wanted to listen to me talk about how I felt - they just kept telling me that it'll get better and not to think about it. But when you lose someone you love it's impossible not to think about it or feel bad. There was one person (my aunt, actually) who just sat and listened to me talk about how I felt and how I missed my friend. I was so grateful to her for listening and letting me cry. (I didn't want to cry at home in front of my little girl)

You sound like a great niece - your aunt is lucky to have someone like you who cares about her.

Good luck to you and your aunt!

You don't have to say anything special. Just give her a hug and sit next to her and listen if she wants to talk. Your empathy is enough.

be yourself. listen carefully, most of the time that's all anyone wants. throw in a few hugs and smiles if needed.
