If you found a good, fair mechanic, then I say yes.. I'm an engine builder by trade and it's always a great feeling when my customers gives me a hand shake, and a small tip or a 6 pack of brew... Better yet for me though is after they run the car the 1st time at the track, then comes back to me just tell tell me job well done, very happy with the engine, etc.

It is good to tip your mechanic. People think that mechanics make so much money, when in fact, they only make a certain % of the actual labor cost. If only one vehicle comes in for repair that week, and labor is 100$, the mechanic will take home 30-50$ for that week (depending on the % the get). That is all they get on their paychecks. They don't get money from the parts. The company keeps that. The mechanic is just an employee of a company, just like all other people out there, working their rears off to try and make ends meet. It doesn't have to be an enormous tip, just a little jesture saying, "thanks for all of the blood and sweat it took to repair my vehicle so I can get to work, run my errands, rush a child to the hospital and not have to walk or take public transpo."
Beyond all of that, you should always tip someone who provides a service that one can't do, or doesn't feel like doing, but only if it is good, friendly and polite service. Plus, you will feel the goodness in your heart afterwards, especially when you see the person you tipped perk up and feel good themselves. Plus next time you go in, you will get good service.

Yes I have been offered tips for completing a job on time, or ahead of schedule.
I always refuse the tip, and just tell them to let there friends know about me.
Any mechanic should do the same, otherwise I would not bother with him

why? If Im already paying for the labor.
I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but why tip someone for doing there job, which you are already paying for?
I understand if he/she did something for you, like found a part that wasn't around, or if it was a busy day, and you were last on the schedule list, and the mechanic fix your car before the others

No. They have an estimation chart, how much time is estimated to do a certain job. That is what they charge, if the mechanic is any good he can finish in probably half the time. They over charge you anyhow.

No, as I use the dealership, and as they are billed out at almost $100/hour I see no point in tipping them.
