It's ridiculous, but it does sound about right. The trip charge is just to show up. Labor is probably at least $40.00 an hour with a one hour minimum. It doesn't matter if he spent 5 minutes on 59 minutes. And if he spent 65 minutes, he would have charged you $80.
I think you got lucky on that part cost. He could have doubled that. Actually he might have doubled it. He could have tripled it and you might not have known. Part could have only cost him $8 and probably did.

A lot of larger elect. repair co.s have a fixed rate for a road call,40 to 50 $ is average. labor is 42$ hour or any part of,in my area and the price of the part dosen't seem out of line. You might complain (nicely) to the manager and maybe he will cut you a break. It looks like there is room to do this and still make a good profit, but he is within the law.

Contractors around me charge $75.00 a vist, just to come out, plus labor and parts, So I think 49.95 was not bad, but being that you are only 5 min away prob does not matter. They charge that fee to everyone I bet.
I am guessing there is not a whole lot you can do about it. I will say it would have cost me more.

You want the service company to carry thousands of dollars worth of parts on their truck, pay for fuel and upkeep of the truck, pay the service person a decent wage and benefits, pay for a office and warehouse and come out to your house when you call and fix your dryer for what? $25.00. Next time take your dryer into their shop and tell me if the charges were fair or not. And no, I am not a appliance repair person.

Despite what pan_clock says this is pretty standard stuff. You can't get any sort of tradeperson to come to your house for less than $75. It sucks but that's how it is. Next time you can ask before they come out what the charges will be, but it is unlikely you could have gotten a better deal anywhere else.

In southern West Virginia they do not charge the trip fee. The fee would have been 56-70, they may include driving as part of their labor, but I agree that the fee is excessive

did you pay him? i wouldn't have. i would of told him tough deal with it. I'm not paying for you to go anywhere. that is outrageous i would complain and i wouldn't pay that. that seems crazy i could see 50 or 60 $ to get it fixed and that's the pricey range but him charging you all that i would suggest calling whoever employes him and let them know. plus those kind of people will try to rip you off just if they think they can get away with it. some will even go past what their company says. just to try to rip you off. i have had it happen several times i told him to get off my property and don't expect to go to work in the morning cause i highly doubt that you will have your job by tomorrow. i would suggest calling the company also threaten to bash their business and stuff like that i get really aggressive with them and put them in their place. also if you have paid for it i would recommend trying to get a refund or something. and if you do happen to talk to them court means nothing but bashing their business is forever. it will do more damage to them than anything. also don't let them push you around remember no matter how nice you are they are working for you not the other way around.

Sounds reasonable to me. Ask yourself this question - If you hadn't called him how long would it have taken you to do it and would it be working correctly now? You pay for their expertise and training and not some migrant worker who crossed the border last week.
