The middle east was the heart of world trade routes at the time. The Roman Empire had taken over so people traveled quite freely within it. Paul spread this message and it just seemed to stick. Maybe this was because many people felt oppressed by the new rulers. I guess right place, right time for spreading a religion. It is interesting that Christianity went from being the only illegal religion in the Roman Empire to the only legal one. I don't think relief is in sight, but I think there are many good people in every religion, so yes, I get irritated with some of them, but some have been my best friends when I needed them the most.

Well, when it was perpetuated in times gone by (remember the crusades?) it was convert or die. I think that in that situation I'd probably convert too. After a few generations people don't remember that their religion was forced upon them, so they continue.

The whole "myth" as you say will take quite some time to dissipate since the majority of the worlds population subscribes to one of the Abrahamic traditions (Judiasm, Islam and Christianity). It's pretty well entrenched at this time.

The good news (no pun intended) is that more and more people are realizing that they do not need ORGANIZED religion to rule their lives. This is the best hope for us as it helps people to think for themselves rather than believe blindly what they are told.

At the end of the day, almost all religion / spiritual paths come down to the same basic principles - all each of the different players won't admit that. Take away the "One True" malarky and you get understanding and agreement.

Myth? You think that Jesus Christ is a myth? Jesus followed the blood line of Abraham. Do yopu know who the father of Islam is? Abraham's son Ishmael. There was a universal flood. do you know what country's religions have an universal flood in them? China, Mexico, India, upon others. Did you know that Jesus is also in the Islamic religion. Jesus Christ is no myth! The Jews had Pilate guard Christ's tomb. When the disciples started to spread that Christ had risen the Jews tried to put a stop to it. The Roman Catholics tried to put a stop to it. Christianity is still alive. Once again Jesus is no myth. There is no relief in sight. As soon as you die you are going to go to hell for your sins. Jesus died so that you could live in heaven with Him.

A) The Jesus Myth is an amalgam of many other myths of the time: Mithras, Attis, Dionysus, the Mysteries of Isis, Osiris, & Horus, etc. So it was easy to impose in a homogeneous sort of way.

B) It was spread by conquering nations (Roman, Spanish, American, etc.)

I don't think relief is anywhere near. Perpetrators of the Jesus myth will fight with perpetrators of the Muhammad myth and they will both fight perpetrators of other myths until there is no beauty left in mankind.

That sounds more depressing than I meant it to, but really. They are all sucking the fun out of life, aren't they?!?!

Which part are you refering to? If it's what I'm thinking, then yes. Relief will be in sight. The truth can never be hidden forever.

It was and is a very simple mixture of threat and promise to any that thought of themselves as Christians. If you constantly tell people that you accept Jesus and God and try to force them to believe also you will go to heaven. If you don't constantly bug people you will go to the Christian Hell with them. This mixture of threat and promise is a standard practice in any tyranny. You just change the proper names of the product being pushed and Gulag in place of Hell and you have communism.
