It all depends.

If there are no kids and it's uncontested then it's over as soon as you sign the papers.

If kids are involved, most state require a 6 month waiting period before either can remarry.

If it's contested, with or without kids, it's not over until a compromise has been reached.

My ex-husband and I separated in January of '06, got served my papers in April, had the divorce hearing in June, divorce was finalized in September.

Depending on your state laws it could be as instant as a signature on a piece of paper or longer if the courts are involved and theres a legal battle. You need to check your state laws because they vary state to state.

all cases are different, if it not contested 30-60 days. Mine took over 2 yrs. We ended up making the lawyers rich.

I was married for 31 yrs and it took me 1 yr, because we had cars, land, and other things to sidle on. it goes 50-50. unless you fight over the kids, or what each other has. trust me its lasted to long] and we had a good divorce.
