The Mariners, who lost out on all of the pitching that interested them, had their final pre-trading deadline talk not about a pitcher by about an infielder.

Seattle came very close to getting the Astros to part with Mark Loretta, sources say.

General manager Bill Bavasi said the club was close on landing a position player just before time expired. He wouldn't be more specific, but it was learned later that Loretta was the player the Mariners were trying to pry loose.

It was going to be a sweet deal if it went through, because the Mariners weren't having to give up any minor leaguers they consider their top eschlon.

He's primarily known as a second baseman, but he's played three dozen games both at short and second this year in addition to 18 games at first and third. He's hitting .294, just four points under his career batting average.

Whats up with that? Where would Loretta even fit? We have the best defensive MI and great corners, Not to mention Vidro's been great! Ugh Bavasi...

Mark Loretta is a solid player that could help out at several positions. The Mariners have a shot at the playoffs this year and I believe they were looking at Loretta as insurance should anyone go down. By the way, I really believe Loretta is a better player than Vidro, at this point in his career, and that move could have sent Vidro to the bench.

The Ms do have a great defense, but I think that Loretta could switch with Lopez or even sit Vidro.

I dont know were you would put Loretta.

I think it would come down to Vidro or Loretta if the M's had gotten Loretta.
