I suppose it takes the place of 'umm' or any other filler. It's kind of an interesting psychological phenomenon. It's fun to pay attention to how many times someone (or yourself) says 'like' or 'umm' or 'know what I mean'...

The person probably doesn't have a good vocabulary, or is trying to "search" for the right word at the same time sounding confused.

may be they want to understand each other more by using examples, similarity, ...
may be it's just a coincidence that most of people u see say "like" so much...

I don't know but it's -- like-- annoying. You have to weed through all the 'likes' to figure out what they are -- like -- talking about!
