I saw an insect I've never saw before and am curious as to what it was. Firstly i'm in the UK which may narrow the search down abit. It looked like a wasp, it was black and yellow also but not as bright as a wasp if you know what I mean. It was about 6 cm long it had a needle on its tail and it alone was about 1 cm long, It had a wing span of about 5 cm and was quite a scary looking thing, it was also very agressive. it was about 3 times bigger than you bog standard wasp but the needle type thing on its tail was the most promenant thing

I think it is a HAW FLY. The long bit on its rear that looks like a sting is in fact an ovipositor. It uses it to inject its eggs into tree bark, then the grubs eat the wood before hatching.
Otherwise a hornet, these tend to have a reddish tinge to their rear.
The easy way to tell the two apart is Haw flies have a fat waist whereas all hornets and wasps have a extremely this waist segment.

What you saw was a giant Horntail [Urocerus Gigas] and they have that long point on it's tail. They look very much like big wasps but do not sting and are harmless. They are wood borers and came into the UK with the first import of fir trees.

Could it be a cicada killer wasp? We have them here (I am in Indiana in the USA). I have read about them a bit online, and have read that they are actually not very aggressive, but they are very scary looking.

You can go to the website below and see a picture of the kind I have found in my yard.

Good luck!

In the depths of the cold war many were the things thought up by our backroom johnnies, this sounds to me like an anti Russian death beetle. One sting and you can get fitted for a set of wings and start harp lessons. but they were only supposed to sting the enemy...........

NOT a hornet. Sounds like a wood wasp.

The giant "sting" is for laying eggs, and is harmless.

Sounds like a dragon fly of some kind. They're becoming more common.
