What if you don't get paid, as for relatives? If you can pick up babies, can't you use your hands to work?

I think you have received some good answers. You can earn a certain amount while collecting disability income. Of course it is a matter of conscience as to whether you report it (or how much you report) to the SSA. As one respondent mentioned, the parents you babysit for may claim the expense for income tax purposes.
However, are you sure babysitting is the way to go? How old are these "babies"? With the disabilities you mention, can you lift and hold infants, run around after toddlers, smack a pre-teen (I'm joking)? Would you be taking medication that might affect your ability to watch someone's children? Could you afford to lose your benefits if it comes to the attention of the SSA that you earn more than you should? Please weigh the pros and cons.

Asperger syndrome is most certainly a disability. It may or may not be disabling. A disability is something about you that is different than what is expected of a typical or ordinary person. Some disabilities meet qualifications to receive financial benefits, others different types of support services , and some nothing at all. It depends on how much it interferes with your ability to carry on an ordinary life, where you live, and what type of benefit you are seeking. For some having Asperger syndrome is extreme disabling. Try as they might they are unable to find their place within society. Whether this is the fault of the Asperger syndrome or of society many disagree.

SSI allows you to make around $180 per MONTH. So who's gonna report it to the Feds? I wouldn't. Having to live off the pittance they give you for SSI is absolutely ridiculous. If the poverty level is about $25,000 a year, these people are below the poverty, poverty, poverty, level. They get less than $9,000 per year. The PROBLEM is that some people want to claim the money on their income tax under child care. THEN you can get in trouble for not reporting it. If they insist on doing that, I'd quit babysitting for them.

If it's like an occasional favor, probably not. But if it's like a home business, yes, because your disability is based on your ability to support yourself. If you are making money, you may be entitled to less disability.

If your drawing Social Security Disability you aren't suppose to make a dime, if they find out they will cut your disability off if you are making money and the party you baby sit for reports your earning on their tax return. Your suppose to be totally and permanently disabled to earn any money.

If you are getting paid you have to inform Social Security of your income and they could lose their Social Security check.
