b) Explain why no negative values are chosen as values to substitute in for x.

Just substitute the value of x in the expression.

x = 1, y = 3
x = 2, y = 3.414
x = 3, y = 3.732
and so on.

We do not chose any negative value of x because there are no real underroots of negative nos.

for a) just plug it in to your calculator...
remember to do the (root of x) first, and then add by 2..
example: x=1 so y=(root of 1)+2
=1+2
=3
for part b), you cannot take the root of a negative number...it is not possible..
