Hi, I am moving to the Trace Condominiums at Crossing Place 78741 in a few weeks as a new UT student. Can someone tell me about the neighborhood?

Specifically, do I need a car to get to the grocery stores? How "walkable" is the area? Are there streets for pedestrians or is it just roads full of cars?

I am coming from wayyy up northeast so bringing a car or driving down is going to be BIG hassle and headache I'd like to avoid if possible.

Any advice? Thanks!

That's in the East Riverside area, right?
There's a couple UT shuttles that run through that area, but unless you are going to campus, you're not going to be able to get around much anywhere else. East Riverside isn't really a "walkable area" - it's mostly strip mall type area with lots of apt complexes - you probably don't want to be walking around there at night, either. Texas (Austin included) is not very pedestrian friendly in general, and the bus system leaves a whole lot to be desired. That said, it's possible to live there just fine without a car, but it's not ideal (plus it is hot and humid here, not ideal for walking).

here is everything about 78741

East riverside is a bunch of students that catch the bus to UT. It's very walkable, but I hope you like car fumes, because Riverside has a lot of traffic. Historically, anything east of 35 wasn't as desireable, but the students started changing that about 10 years ago on Riverside. about the same time that the bus system got popular. Cap Metro. This area is full of young people in apartments. If you venture too far into the east side, you will not want to walk around AT ALL. The guy above says that we don't have ghettos, well, compared to compton or something, no, but you can still find crack heads, you know. For the most part, Austin isn't a very walking kind of place. No one ever planned for that kind of thing. Now we are headed more in that direction. Mueller is trying to do that and all of the condos in the DOWN TOWN are walking friendly. There are some condos about to break ground near stubbs BBQ that will have a great location. ..but the salvation army is around the corner. For me, I'd like to find an old house near congress bridge. that would be the sh*t.

I used to live about a mile south of that location (off of Oltorf) and knew people who lived in in apartments on Riverside. It is pretty mixed. We lived there for several years and it was fine, but cannot say it is a desirable location in Austin. As a student you will be bothered because it isn't close to the areas where UT students tend to congregate (6th street, the drag, north campus, etc).

To answer you question about the car. Yes... you will need one, especially given where you are going to live. There ARE a couple of big stores on east Riverside, a movie theatre, a couple of strip malls, etc. And, there are several decent restaurants close by, especially if you go west toward Congress or Lamar. However, none of these are a short, easy walk. (And, consider that Austin is typically quite humid, making walking hard if you aren't used to it).

I'm not familiar with the location, but, living in Austin usually requires a car...unless you are living on campus, or directly next to it. Public transportation is not as good here as it is in many NE cities. There is a UT shuttle to many apt complexes in the city...have you checked to see if your apt is on it? The zip code does indicate that you live many miles from campus. Sorry.
