Hey there is no actual way you can tell whether core 2 duo is better than amd or not. Because AMD is a manufacturer. Its usually the number that follows. The best way to determine is to take two or more laptops, get their model number and then go to the manufacturer's website and look up how many giga hertz it has. The more obviously the better. Besides, AMD is mostly for gaming computers and Intel is more for word-processing and such office work. Hope this answers your question.

Core 2 Duo is better than Turion, Turion is better than Core Duo (without the 2) or Pentium-M.

You really have to look at different laptops to decide what's best for you- do you want something with long battery life, or is a bigger screen more important? Do you need a DVD-Burner? Built-in Wifi? How often will you travel with it? What will your primary usage be?

Go to www.pcworld.com and get the latest ratings. You can also check for problems with different brands/models. It comes down to what you need/want. A good all around choice is IBM. Off lease is much cheaper and can be purchased with warranties. eBay is big on these, but buy from a vendor that sells laptops and offers warranties. T30, T40 and T60 series are good, depending on the features.speed you want. IBM is a workhorse and offers extended life batteries for these models. Beware of models that have defective batteries. Also, some brands may get so hot they can burn you. (bottom)

Hi Dude...
With that price range, I bet you can go for a Dell XPS 1330 (the slimest 13 inch LCD notebook), great features and styling... Best part of Dell is that you can customize the laptop as per your requirements....
Other recommendation is Dell Inspiron 1720 (17" display) if size doesnt bother you or you can also try Inspiron 1520 (beautiful and powerful)..
