Maybe one or two songs are ok but the rest are crap unless you are trippin on acid. What is the attraction of Floyd? Is it just a nostalgic thing or what?

their music was highly innovative and different than anything else at that time in the late sixties and early seventies.

Look man, it's just a simple thing: Some people like Pink Floyd, some don't. It's not a drug thing, because I love Pink Floyd and I don't even drink. They must have done something right, because DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was on the charts longer than any other album in history (13 years). I always say to people who are about to listen to the album, don't listen to it in your car. Take 45 minutes to chill (drugs are optional) put the album on and just take it in. You can't beat the brilliance of "Time" (particularly Gilmour's shearing guitar solo) the upbeat "Money" or the thought-provoking "Us and Them."

Apart from DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, you've got MEDDLE which has "Echoes" another true epic. If you dig that tune I highly recomend LIVE AT POMPEII which is one of my favorite music DVDs. WISH YOU WERE HERE is amazing too. Again, the only way to listen to these albums is chill and have an open mind.

Now if you're listening to their later stuff, THE FINAL CUT, MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON, you're getting the wrong message. Those two albums are average at best. Even THE DIVISION BELL, which I love, is not the album to start with. THE WALL is many a favorite to some people, but I always recomend DARK SIDE OF THE MOON first.

So give DARK SIDE OF THE MOON another listen, take it all in, be in a cool state of mind (not necessarily stoned) and see if you can dig it. If not, you don't have to be a Floyd fan.

Crap? What are your two songs? Money and Another Brick in the Wall Part 2?

It's definitely not nostalgia, as I was only two when their last tour went in 1994. I listened to Dark Side of the Moon on headphones, and I fell in love. The ideas and sounds are just amazing... not sure why they are, but they just are. The best thing of Dark Side is the headphones, you HAVE to listen to it at least once on headphones.

Are you basing your opinion on Momentary Lapse of Reason or Division Bell? That era sucked in my humble opinion. Others like it. Or maybe Piper at the Gates of Dawn?

I find their history neat mostly. The songs sound different from other bands. If you still think they're a stoner band, I've never been tripping on anything other than music. You seriously don't need acid to trip on Pink Floyd.

It depends on what you like. It's the rhythms and sounds that draw in so many crowds. Pink Floyd is different than any other group, even now a days. Thats what draws in the crowds. Their music has a different edge, such as the song, Money (I'm using this as an example because everybody knows it) They are singing about how money can litterally change a person, as well as they are bringing in the matters of what interests their listeners. Gangster movies were pretty big at the time, and the ending of the song is relevant to the Gangster theme.

To each his or her own. I love Pink Floyd. From '73 to '94 the sound quality of their albums was superb, the soaring guitar melodies of David Gilmour, the spacy keyboards of Richard Wright made for what I consider some of the most interesting music to listen to. They got a bit off track with "Final Cut" and some of the tracks on the "Wall" were a bit hard to listen to, but some of the other tracks on the "Wall" were brilliant. Their mastery of the studio was unsurpassed, but unlike other studio gurus, they could actually play their instruments and also put on a good live show. The ability to stay focused on a theme for an entire album while still breaking it down into bite sized pieces was also a speciality. You can listen to "Time" or "Us and Them" from DSotM as stand alone songs, or within the context of the total album.

Their pre-DSotM stuff is a bit less listener friendly, but I also love it. But it is hardy to give good reasons why. Maybe I just like trippy experimental music. The Syd Barrett era stuff is fun to listen to in my opinion.

Maybe the other reason people like them is the fact that they didn't become stars because of their looks or because they could bust a move. They were just 4 guys making strange, but interesting music that somehow touched a lot of people.

Dark Side of the Moon I believe holds the record for the longest time any album has ever sat on the Billboard Top-100 Albums.

But hey, if you don't like it, don't listen to it.

P.S. One more thought: The music is sufficiently complex that you notice new things each time you listen (maybe for the first 10 or 20 times or so).

you have to understand that floyd came at a time when most rock n roll bands sounded the same.when you heard other bands from that era, it was obvious where they had gotten inspiered from. the rolling stones, the beatles, the animals. pink floyd, created something new, perhaps the first real phsycadelic band that became that popular, because of thier obvious talent. most fans of floyd understand what they are saying and where they are coming from. each song has a certain meaning to it. in some ways if you truly listen to thier music, you can in a way feel, what they felt when they played thier music.

seriously...... why do people like rap its sooo stupid in my opinion I mean all they talk about is sex and love but you can hardly understand what they are saying I mean they are talking sooo fast and plus, the music is just techno or whatever the word is for it..... and rock is pure music that comes from an instrument.... I'm sorry I havent answered your question umm... people like pink Floyd because they were a sensational rock band....

Well it shouldn't really matter if other people like them, because you don't have to like them. I'm not crazy about Pink Floyd either, but I don't force myself to listen to it, and I don't question others on why they like it as music is subjective.
