I have an older friend (much older) who recently lost her husband. I was her student at one point and we were really good friends. Im trying to go see her, but I need to send something in advance. Also, should I call or email or something as well?

You should call her and tell her you are sorry. If the funeral has already happened, send her a note. Tell her again that you were sorry to hear the sad news about her husband. Ask if she would like to go out for lunch one day soon. (You may find that she will be thrilled to get out of the house. I have heard the worst for the widows or widowers is that they are home alone all the time). It would be a nice gesture. Then ask her about her husband. When they were married? Have they always lived in Cleveland? Where are the kids? What are they doing now? Just get her talking and it will help her so much. You sound like a wonderful person.
