we indian often take pride of our 5000 years of glorious past but become equally emotional to celebrate 15 aug as our indepence day each year since 1947. what we are trying to highlight ? that we were never independent prior to 15 aug 1947? we were slaves with a glorious past. that's funny. No self respecting nation shoul behave in this way. skip the celebration this year. at l;east 60 % of the money will not go to the wrong hands besides reminding queen of victoria of her glorious past at our cost.

We are trying to highlight August 15 as a day on which we became free, and also to remember those freedom fighters who fought for us.

It's still worthy of celebration that you are rid of those sociopathic Brits. Look up into the 18th century famines caused by British sacking of Indian grain silos and the destruction of the Indian pre-modern textile industry.
We still have plenty of psychos to overthrow, that is for sure. Celebrating the concession of ruthless tyrants that granted you freedom is only half-sheepish.
As for slavery, India may have been great, but it is still and has been for millenia, a caste society. Not quite the freedom lovers you are made out to be. Elect an untouchable for president and then we'll talk.
