they put it there for 2 reasons, the first reason is that is listed above about being closer to the equator, the second is that there are 2 large bodies of water on either side of florida so if something did go horribly wrong debrie wouldnt cause chaos and perhaps spread problems like fire and property damage, all the debris would fall into the ocean. so in short the space center is in the place it is today because of saftey issues and ease of launch

Ideally, you'd want to put a launch pad *on* the Equator, to get the maximum amount of boost from the Earth's 1000MPH rotation. Florida just so happens to be closest to the Equator, while still being a part of the contiguous United States (Hawaii would be better, but shipping parts of rockets to Hawaii for launch would be cumbersome...)
This is the same reason the French built their Arianne launching site in Guiana.

1. Property at that location was very inexpensive and plentiful at the time.
2. Closer to the equator, making synchronous orbit launches easier.
3. Weather was conducive to year-round launch and recovery capability.
4. The politician's needed jobs for their family members who already lived there!

The so-called "devil's triangle" is a cultural myth, and does not exist in real life. So it was not a consideration in the planning of the space effort.

Like you said, in 40 years, nothing untoward has happened there. Maybe the devil can't reach that high. Or maybe it really IS just hurricanes and pirates.
