I just saw Compusa offering a good deal on HP Pavilion dv6426us. It costs 649.99 after 200 mail-in rebate. It only has a core duo processor. I wonder how is the core 2 duo better than core duo? Sincerely

in addition to what jake said, the core 2 uses a 65nm process...which means it has smaller transistors. Smaller transistors=less power consumption=less heat generated, while at the same time allowing more speed and efficiency!

If you want to see how the Core Duo, Core 2 Duo and other processors hold up via various industry-established benchmarks, check out the website listed below under 'sources'.

Generally, if you are paying for 649.99 (which is a lot, actually) for a laptop, you will want a future-proof processor and decent memory. While Compusa is a well-established reseller of electronics, in my honest opinion most of the deals advertised by them are ripoffs. x_x

Lets look at the specs:

HP dv6426us - 649.99 (after 200 rebate):
- Core Duo Processor T2450
- 1GB RAM
- 160GB HD at 5400rpm
- Intel GMA 950 video/graphics

Dell Vistro 1500, $599, no rebates and free shipping (from www.dealsea.com, scroll all the way down, and buy through dell.com)
- Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz
- 1GB Ram
- 120GB HD 5400rpm
- 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

In every respects (besides the 40GB HD difference), the Dell Vistro is a better deal. The Dell laptop processor is the most update to date, and performs better than the HP older version. The nVidia video card is miles ahead of the cheapie Intel graphics. As for the storage, it can be easily compensated through the various cheap external harddrives available online. One should also note that I just pulled this off a regular deal site, and with the relevant coupons that you can obtain, the savings are can be even more substantial.

The bottom line is, Compusa is not known for their generosity, and you should also make detailed back ups of your rebate if you do plan to buy through them. I recommend you to browse through the various deal sites (see below) before making your purchase.

Happy hunting!

P.S. The Dell deal ends August 1st, and I have no idea when the Compusa deal terminates. Therefore, you will have to act soon if you want a good deal ~_^

core duo has a smaller cache, slower fsb, and 32 bit only. core 2 duo has a larger cache, faster fsb, and 64 bit.
