Hello Mike,
This time you really gone financial, and yeah I read you yodels blog that was nice. Now coming to the point as you have asked Star wars and Harry Potter no doubt really they are two good movies with episodes/parts and lots of hit merchandise and franchise. In my personal opinion the Harry Potter was overall. But as you have asked facts and real things lets do some research.
Star Wars is an influential science fantasy saga and fictional universe created by writer/producer/director George Lucas during the 1970s. In 2005, Forbes Magazine estimated the overall revenue generated by the entire Star Wars franchise (over the course of its history) at nearly US $20 billion, making it one of the most successful franchises of all time. On another hand Wikipedia says in 2007, the overall box office revenue generated by the entire Star Wars franchise (over the course of its history) is at around US $4.3 billion, making it one of the most successful franchises of all time.
For Harry Potter The books have sold over 325 million copies worldwide and have also given rise to the popular film adaptations produced by Warner Bros., all of which have been successful in their own right with the first, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, ranking number four on the inflation-unadjusted list of all-time highest grossing films and the other four Harry Potter films each ranking in the top 20. The films have in turn spawned five video games and have in conjunction with them led to the licensing of over 400 additional Harry Potter products (including an iPod) that have, as of July 2005, made the Harry Potter brand worth an estimated 4 billion US dollars and J.K. Rowling a US dollar billionaire, making her, by some reports, richer than Queen Elizabeth II.
So it is clear that Star Wars is winner, but I strongly say, till now. Star Wars is a old drama and Harry potter is a new one with a huge sensation and last book has just been released and their are still growth in revenues quickly. But for your question till now, clearly Star Wars and its franchise has earned more money overall.
Hope it is informatic. Bye.

Till now i can say that Star Wars is the one which had earned more money...this is mostly because it was here long before the Harry Potter saga. With the remaining 2 movies to be released and the current one DVD that will be released in a near future the Harry Potter saga will earn money.
So if the coming 2 movies will have their toys, games, DVD's ,etc to be released then Harry Potter may earn more money than Star Wars.
This may be confirmed in 2011...as it is rumoured that the last episode in the Harry Potter saga will be released in 2010. So it need about a year for its toys, DVD's, etc to be sold adequately.

Out of the top-50 highest grossing films ever (indefinitive, interest-unadjusted), it runs:
# 4 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) - Warner Bros. $976,475,550,
# 6 Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) - 20th Century Fox $924,300,000,
# 9 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) - Warner Bros. $892,194,397,
# 13 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) - Warner Bros. $866,300,000,
# 15 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) - 20th Century Fox $850,000,000,
# 19 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) - Warner Bros. $789,804,554,
# 22 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) - 20th Century Fox $775,408,007,
# 27 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) - Warner Bros. $701,300,000,
# 31 Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) - 20th Century Fox $649,398,328,
# 39 Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) - 20th Century Fox $572,713,000,
# 44 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - 20th Century Fox $538,375,067
If you wanted, you could go through all that and add it up and divide it etc. however you want. But the main two numbers I heard were $4 Billion for the Harry Potter franchise, and $22 Billion for the STAR WARS.

In terms of movies alone, as I can't answer in regards to books, toys, and other merchandising, but the Star Wars franchise has earned more than Harry Potter. Not adjusted for inflation, Star Wars has earned $1,882,800,000 with an average of $313.8 million per film. Harry Potter has earned $1,373,300,000 with an average of $274.7 per film.
This is of course without inflation, and considering that Star Wars has been a mega earner of 30 years, the unadjusted total is much less than the actual total adjusted for inflation.

Well i would say Star Wars because they still keep making the toys and new books come out all the time. However with all that said a talk show my mother watched the other day said that the number 1 selling series of movies was James Bond but that by the time the Harry Potter series was done it would be the top selling series. So eventually i think Harry Potter will out sell Star Wars.

right now it is Star Wars, But that will probably change since the amounts are 4.31 Billion for Star Wars and 3.5 Billion for Harry Potter to date.
People also forget the winning franchise is still James Bond with 4.35 Billion to date. And it is still going.
I look to see Harry Potter get ahead of Star Wars for just a few years, but when Lucas Film Releases episodes 7,8 and 9 the argument will be over and Star Wars will prevail( part of the hold up to new Indiana Jones was Fords agreement to appear in new films).
We can not discount the Bond, James Bond quotient as well, the invigoration Daniel Crag has introduced to that franchise is next to amazing and the critics have acknowledged they were wrong.
Happy Movie watching.

I can't really tell for sure so I can't argue on that one. Harry Potter is still new (only 10 years old) whereas Star Wars has been around for over 30 years. It's like trying to compare a kid with his much more experienced father.

Star Wars. There's more books and merchandising for Star Wars. Don't forget Star Wars had a bit of a head start [it's been around thirty years].
