after the death of sherbet my goldfish my mate said she had a fish given to her but didnt want it.... so she brought it round to mine to replace my sherbet... this fish is strange looking, he has whiskers which come out from his lower abdomen and is rather flat. he is silver light blue and has patches of darker blue round his entire body. i cant find any pictures that resemble him.... any help will be appreciated. he is boring though.. just likes to sit by his plants all day.

Catfish don`t have whiskers on their lower abdomen gouramis do, I`d go with the bunch who suggest blue opaline gouramis. However they are not coldwater fish which is probaby why he hangs around doing nothing, He`s freezing to death.

Could be a catfish but they generally have "whiskers" around their mouths and I've never heard of one that has them growing from it's lower abdomen.

If it's flat from side to side rather than top to bottom it could be either a Gourami of some sort (there are quite a few of them) or perhaps even an Angelfish. Both Gourami's and Angelfish will often float motionless (amongst plants if there are any) in the water particularly if they are on their own.

I suggest you have a look in an aquarists shop or get a book on tropical fish and see if you can find anything similar.

Umm.. you may have. Some catfish will live in indoor tanks without heating. Or it could be a blue or opaline gourami, as previously said. The staying still would resemble catfish behaviour well.

Could you take a photo? If so, I daresay either me or someone else would be able to identify them.

By the way, it's not a carp.

SOunds like it probbaly is a catfish of some type. If you have any way to take a photo of the fish and post a link to the photo someone can ID it for you and help with it's care requirements. If you can get a photo and need help with the link, feel free to email me the photo and I'll help with that too. magicman116@yahoo.com

this is called a cory cat they are bottom dewllers they clean algea and stuff from the gravel. All tanks should have them all fresh water that is. I would get another fish though cuz they shouldnt be in a tank by them selves.
