Recently I purchased a Black and Red Oranda Goldfish. I have done some research on the breed. When I got my Goldfish (Helio) he was a beautiful golden red with a black stripe down his back and on the tips of his tail and dorsal fin. It's been a few months and now his black coloring is gone. He is just one solid color (Red). I understand that the breed has a helmet-like growth on their heads and it grows as they mature, but can the color change as well?

I also have a Calico Ryukin Goldfish and a Pleco in the same tank.

Yes, they can change color and in fact frequently do in regards to the amount of black on their bodies. Believe it or not, the color of gravel in your tank can influence this as well. Darker gravel encouages the fish to blend in and will result in the black areas being darker and more visible. It won;t cause a red fish to become a black fish or anything , but it will make a difference over time.

Diet may also be a consideration, but as long as you feed a fairly well balanced diet based around a quality flake or pellet, that will not be an issue for you.

Genetics is the main reason you see such color changes and of course it will happen no matter what you do or don't do.
