I have a feeling that the problem is not with WMP. If you have upgraded from XP to Vista, there is a high possibility that Vista doesn't have drivers for your CD Drive, DVD Drive and or your Graphics Card. It's a common problem when upgrading Operating Systems. To solve the problem, you will need to go to the website for the manufacturer of your Optical Drives and/ or your graphics card and see if they have a drivers update for your version. If they don't, you will probably have to get rid of them and buy new DVD Drives that are Vista compatable.

If you google (or Yahoo) for the "vista codec pack" you get enough results to get you to the right place.

This pack contains all the codecs you should need for Vista.

Simply download and install. All the codecs are tweakable, but you don't have to tweak them if you don't want to.
