Richard A. Linehan (1872-1852) b. Lawrence, MA
(likely played in the 1890's)

and

James E. Ryan (1867-1903) b. Haverhill, MA
(likely played in the 1880's)

Their granddaughter tells me they played for minor league teams in New England.

Could find nothing on-line about them. Anyone have a reference?

Obviously, I meant Richard A. Linehan (1872-1952).

Checking online, evidently there were minor league teams back then.

Anyone know a really good and comprehensive reference book for the 1880 & 1890's?

The legend is that Doubleday invented baseball in 1839, but it likely evolved from one of several prior games. Doubleday died in 1893.

There was a NY Knickerbocker Club playing in Hoboken in 1845, and Civil War troops played frequently in the early 1860's.

i have never heard of them. you probably won't find anything because they won't have minor league records from back then. it probably wasn't even a minor league team (i didnt think they had minor leagues back then)-probably some independent league

The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues didn't get started until 1901. They recently changed the name to the Association of Minor Leagues. So, if there were minor league teams in the 1800s (and I'm sure there were) I doubt the records are archives either with MLB or the current organization for the minors.
There were major league teams in New England during that time. My favorite was the Worcester Ruby Legs. You can search through the below listed URL. They have links to all the old-time teams that have disappeared or been converted into minor league teams.

I agree with whoever said that the records probably were not kept back then. They also could have played on a traveling team, which was seen as a type of farm team since they were not pros. Scouts would watch these traveling teams if rumors of a good player swept their way.

I haven't heard of them, but I looked into it, and my grandparents knew who they were when they were kids.
