Do you think this would be at all effective?

Take some of the billions of dollars that are being dumped into the war on drugs, and start drug testing welfare recipients. If they fail, they get no money and in order to receive money they would have to go through rehab, and pass the test. Kills two birds with one stone. Cuts down on drug usage, and think of all the junkies on welfare that would be kicked off.

???

While I was interning with DCFS, I noticed that most of the so called "junkies" did not receive welfare checks, rather they got SSI (supplemental security Income) checks because the Social Security Administration has decided, in their infinite wisdom, that addiction is a disability. Instead of targeting people who need a one time hand up, lets do something about those who use the system as a career choice.

So, you would not be fighting the war on drugs, but leave them illegal. You'd probably save some on welfare costs, since you'd be denying a lot of adicts welfare, but you'd still have organized crime pushing drugs.

So, not a great solution to both problems, but not a bad idea, either...

Or we can just end welfare and legalize drugs ending both of these money pits.

The true junkies will kill themselves off with the newly legalized pure drugs.

It is called personal responsibility.
Spend your money on food and housing and you will maintain your life.
Spend your money on drugs and you will be homeless and starve to death.
