I think you answered it yourself, NORTON.
Resource hog, slows a PC down.

The RAM MAY be the "old DDR1" but if that's what your motherboard needs, that's what you have to use.

U don't say anything about the processor but if it runs DDR not DDR2 memory it's not the latest. Mome memory will not help if the "slowness" comes from the processor struggling to keep up with the requirements of Norton AND everything else you want to do.

Umm. If your old ram was DDR1 then your new ram has to be DDR1 also. Your motherboard can only support 1 type of ram. I own a computer store in Scottsburg, IN. I sell computers all the time that use DDR1 memory and they are just as good, if not better than DDR2.

You may want to look into purchasing a new computer. One with a core 2 duo processor. Take your old ram back to the store where you purchased it and use that money to go towords a computer that will satisfy you for years to come.

What is to slow? The computer or the broadband? How fast or slow the Internet is has nothing to do with your computer. Your isp, ports, and how busy the Internet is. How full is your hard drive? The fuller it gets the slower your computer will run. Only add memory until you cant see any improvement in performance then don't buy anymore its a waste of money.

I'm not sure how old your machine is, but spending $250.00 closely approaches replacement of your PC.

You may have had a bad install of Norton, but try going through your settings (especially the Firewall) first. Open your control Panel and double-click on Security. If you have XP, make sure the "Windows" Firewall has been disabled in favor of the Norton.

If you do not get anywhere, try uninstalling the Norton first and check to see if you have any improvement.

Good luck.

You've probaly gotten a virus that has not yet been discovered or the definitions for it have not been created. Broadban just lets viruses come to your computer faster so take it to a repairman and tell them the issue and to expertly check or manualy remove all the viruses from the system.

one of the key words there was norton! its a memory hog, and if your computer had only 256MB of RAM in it im guessing it isn't a very new computer. I would recommend getting rid of norton and use something like grisofts AVG which is free and tends not to hog memory and CPU usage when its not scanning

remove the old memory, the older memory is likely worse timing and speed, your system can only use ALL memory at the slowest speed, soooooo if you have 2gb of good fast memory and 256 of really slow old memory, all memory operates at the 256 sticks speed. see if that helps, also REMOVE NORTON its a huge resource hog, there are many alternatives that are 10x better.
