Whether baseball fans like it or not, the MLB has allowed the DH to be a spot in the lineup. If it's a part of the game, then the best player ever to be a DH should certainly be a hall of famer.

I'd vote for Martinez, and not even take but a few seconds to decide. DEVASTATING hitter, and occasionally the best player on his team, despite Griffey and Rodriguez being around.
The "DH thing" doesn't matter to me at all. It's a real position, defense rarely factors into Hall consideration anyway (unless it is the player's big selling point -- Ozzie, Mazeroski, Ashburn), and the Hall takes "half players" already (they're called pitchers).
And this man hit SO WELL, and consistently, that his lack of playing defense really doesn't matter.
Martinez 2010.

I always liked Edgar and enjoyed watching him hit during his career. He was a career .312 hitter and finished with 309 homeruns. This will be a good test for those that vote players to the HOF. Martinez will be the first DH to be looked at for the HOF and I believe it will hurt his chances. His numbers are borderline and the fact that most of the tail end of his career was as a DH I believe he won't make it.

YES!!!!! Are you going to deny David Ortiz the hall simply because he didn't play the field? He'll hit X amount of home runs and bat whatever, you can't say its different for anyone else. Edgar was the greatest DH ever, and he'll be the 1st into the Hall, watch

i ought to vote for Martinez, and not even take yet some seconds to return to a call. DEVASTATING hitter, and in many circumstances circumstances the ideas-blowing participant on his team, in spite of Griffey and Rodriguez being around. The "DH ingredient" does not count to me in any appreciate. it particularly is a real place, risk-free practices hardly aspects into hall interest besides (till it particularly is the participant's huge advertising ingredient -- Ozzie, Mazeroski, Ashburn), and the hall takes "a million/2 game enthusiasts" already (they are referred to as pitchers). And this guy hit SO properly, and continually, that his loss of enjoying risk-free practices fairly does not count. Martinez 2010.

Gar's hitting was what elevated him beyond the DH. Paul Molitor is in, so Martinez should go. A guy has to be truly splendid to go in as primarily a DH, but these two fit.

No. He did not play in the field but was a great hitter, but he is not the hitter David Ortiz is. Ortiz may never even make it because he is a DH. And no he was not the best right handed hitter in the game, Frank Thomas was. And you can't compare him to Molitar, because Molitar played 2b most of his career and got to 3000 hits. No way Edgar gets in. Jim Rice is not even in and you think Edgar is going, no way.

He was over 700 hits shy of 3,000. His .312 BA for his career is great, but other than that he doesn't have any real numbers that stick out. He was a great hitter, no question about that, but he didn't put up hall of fame numbers.

No way. His stats don't support a bid to the HOF. He was never the best player in baseball (highest finish in the MVP voting was 3rd one year). He led the league in runs created once. Sure, he won a couple batting titles, but that isn't enough. His hitting stats certainly aren't enough to overcome the fact that he was strictly a hitter, either. There are two sides to the game.

I think he will, on account he was the best right-handed hitter of his day. 'Gar had high average (2 batting titles) and was always dangerous at the plate. I'd like to see him get in someday. . . .
