I am moving out of the apartment that I have lived in for five years. We were allowed to have our two dogs, and we asked the landlady if it would be OK if we put in a doggie door. My boyfriend (at the time) said to her, "you'll probably rent to others with dogs or we can replace the door when we leave", so she let us put one in. So I got a message from the landlady the other day reminding me that I have to replace the door. Should I tell her to take it out of the deposit? I think she wants me to just pay for it, outside of the deposit. I know that there's a possibility that she'll rent to someone else with a dog. Nothing was ever signed saying that I would replace the door when I left. What should I do? I have been on good terms with the landlady and I prefer to keep it that way, but I don't want to get screwed over, either. I live in Montana, if it makes any difference. Thanks in advance!!

The door isn't damaged and the dog didn't do any damage. It's just the doggie door that is the issue.

you answered the question yourself----your boyfriend said "...or we can replace the door when we leave".

she is taking you at your word....do what you promised.....you gave her the option - she decided....now you need to come through.

stay on good terms, clean well, take pics for proof and get your deposit back---she will be a wonderful reference for you.

good luck :)

Having lived in an apartment before and dealing with landlords and pets...You are responsible for a new door. You could tell her to take it out of your deposit, but with the door fee plus any other fees they take out of the deposit when you move (carpet cleaning, painting, holes, cleaning, new stove tops, light bulb replacement, etc) you could get a bill in the mail that says you owe a few dollars beyond what the deposit was. If you replace the door, you know the true cost versus the aparments putting it in and charging you maybe a slightly higher price. Even if it is very true that she may rent to other dog owners, the possibility that they will want that specific apartment or that down the road, a non-pet owner will live there are risks to the apt. complex. I say - replace the door

It wasnt in the lease to put a doggy door in nor for her to say the door should be replaced but if your now leaving and she is asking you put a new door in, you should put one in. Tell her you will price them and buy a standard door (nothing fancy or expensive) in the event she does not rent to a dog owner but another tenant that has pets but just not a dog. Or, if the new tenant has a dog but doesnt use/want a doggy door.

Just check with your landlord if your getting your full deposit back after purchasing a replacement door.

You told her you would replace the door when you left. There for go ahead and replace the door. If you have been on good terms for 5 years, you want to keep it that way. You never know if you might rent from her again!

You're responsible for the door. Just as nothing was signed to say you have to fix it, nothing was signed giving you permission to install the doggie door in the first place. If I were you, I'd just let the landlord take it out of the deposit. It'll save you time and she can't say she doesn't like the workmanship if she does it herself.

Either way you are responsible for a new door. If you have her take it out of deposit it will cost you more. Best bet is to get that boyfriend to put in a new door. Shouldn't cost much but she will most likely have professional do it so you would have to pay professional prices.

Your boyfriend told her that you could replace the door when you leave. Now you're leaving. So replace the door. She's only asking you to do what you said you'd do. So where's the question?

you made the offer to replace it when u left so stand by your word. stop taking advatange of this woman who was kind enough to allow it. return the apartment to the condition she rented to you for it. i suggest asking her either deduct it from ur deposit (but she might overcharge you) i think u should pay for it and replace it yourself so you dont get over charged and both people are happy.
