No, if you are doing things like Word, Excel, internet, you will not really notice a difference.
Go to your local computer store and find an AMD laptop and a Pentium laptop. No the same function on each computer and see if you notice any real difference.

AMD processors are not bad at all, in fact you can thank AMD for having as good a processor as you do to choose from in both AMD and Intel Markets. Without their competition Intel would likely have sat on their hands and we would not have seen the vast improvements as of the last few years.
However, your question is will an AMD laptop be as good as an Intel based. It depends on your budget. I would recommend if you can afford to stay with core 2 duo processors by Intel. AMD used to have a great advantage in mobile computing by both operating with less heat and the capability to really overclock them with no adverse reactions. I do not recommend overclocking, but it is a consideration. Newer mobile processors are somewhat transparent in laptops aside from my recommendations. If you got an AMD I would expect it to perform fine but right now Intel does have the edge on performance. The only problem, and it will always be so I believe, is that Intel insde means extra $$ on the bill when purchasing a new machine. A great place to get some information from numerous avid computer builders and enthusiasts is the forums at motherboards.org. They could help you understand the differences as well as steer you towards the better choice in your search.

Not really. Some people like to get in religious wars about processor brands, but the processor model and speed counts for a lot more than the brand. Plus, there are a lot of other issues aside from the processor that affect system performance (chipset, memory, hard drive, etc.). If you want to compare two laptops, it's best to check on-line reviews and benchmarks for that particular system, someplace like http://review.zdnet.com/. The benchmark for the processor itself is of limited value in judging how the system is really going to perform.

At the very top of the line, the Intels are a little bit faster.
The AMD's run MUCH cooler under load, and use less power.
